The Denver Pioneers men's tennis team defeated the North Dakota Fighting Hawks 6-1 on Sunday to improve to 10-8 and 5-0 in Summit League play. The victory marks the Pioneers' third straight win and ensures a share of the Summit League regular season title. Denver will have a chance to clinch the title against Omaha on Friday, April 19.
With the help of a 6-2 doubles victory from Pedro Fernandez del Valle/ Mattia Ros at No. 2 and a 6-4 doubles win from Daniel Krulig/Eric Morris at No. 3, the Pioneers took an early lead in the match. The success continued in singles play where Denver won in straight sets on five of six courts. Ros, James Davis, Fernandez del Valle, Ignatius Castelino and Krulig each logged victories. Ros won 6-4, 6-0 at No. 1, Davis won 7-5, 6-0 at No. 3, Fernandez del Valle won 6-2, 6-3 at No. 4, Castelino won 6-1, 6-1 at No. 5 and Krulig won 6-2, 6-0 at No. 6.
Denver is set to close the regular season with a pair of matches at the Denver Tennis Park next weekend. The Pioneers will face Nebraska Omaha on Friday, April 19 and New Mexico on Sunday, April 21.
