Esteban Missura tied for 29th after 36 holes
DENVER – The University of Denver Golf team closed out the opening rounds of the Bayou City Collegiate on Monday. The Pioneers posted a team score of 592, 16-over par.
Par for the 7,254-yard course is 72 at the Golfcrest Country Club.
Head coach Erik Billinger went with the lineup of Cal McCoy, Esteban Missura, Eric Hagen, John Sand and Carson Griggs.
"Today wasn't our best day. Overall I saw some good stuff from each guy but I don't think we handled the Bermuda greens very well and the winds swirled in the afternoon making it tough to pick clubs," said Billinger. "Esteban, John and Carson played steady and Cal played solid in the morning. It was a combo of everyone being a couple over in the morning and then in the afternoon wind we had to count a 78. These are the days we learn from and it'll be great to see who learned from today and can score better tomorrow."
Missura had a consistent day, making just six bogeys in 36 holes. He recorded a two-over par 74 in round one and responded with a second round 73 to finish at three-over par after two rounds. He is currently tied for 29th place.
Sand fired three birdies in his first round but six bogeys led to a three-over 75. He responded with three more birdies in round two, posting a one-over 73 to jump up the leaderboard. Sand is tied for 33rd with 18 holes to play.
Griggs had a solid day firing back-to-back rounds of two-over par as he also is tied for 33rd place.
McCoy led DU after one round, recording four birdies while shooting an even par 72 but the freshman posted a second round 77 and is tied for 40th place after 36 holes.
Hagen shot five-over 77 in the first round and eight-over in round two. He is tied for 77th place after 36 holes.
