NEWTON, Kan. – The University of Denver golf team was recognized for its stellar play this season, having four players selected to the All-Summit League team in a release by the league on Saturday night. The four selections marks the second straight year that the Pioneers have had four players earn all-league status.
Sophie Newlove,
Mary Weinstein and
Camille Enright were first-team selections, while
Alyson Bean was named to the second team.
"This is another well-deserved honor for all four of these players," head coach
Lindsay Kuhle said. "These four are a big part of our team's success this spring season along with freshman
Trussy Li. I am proud of each one of them and excited that they are awarded with these honors."
For Weinstein, this marks her second straight first-team selection. The junior has been the best golfer in the Summit League all year, posting a league-low 72.54 scoring average. The Highlands Ranch native also has a team-best six top-10 finishes this season, the most by a DU golfer since the 2013-14 campaign. She also recorded a program-record 8-under 64 in the final round of the Golfweek Conference Challenge back on Sept. 26.
"Mary has had an outstanding season and has the lowest stroke average and highest individual ranking in the Summit League right now," Kuhle said. "She has been consistent every tournament and every round for us not just this spring but started that way this fall season with her impressive 64 in the first tournament of the year."
Newlove earns her first first-team selection in her career as a senior. The England native, a second-team selection as a junior, has been the leader that Denver has needed this season. She ranks fourth in the Summit League in scoring average at 75.2. Newlove has posted seven rounds of par-or-better in 2018-19, highlighted by a career-best 67 (5-under) in the second round of the Westbrook Invitational back on Feb. 25.
The 2018-19 season has seen the rise of Enright, who makes the first team for the first time in her collegiate career. The Plano, Texas native has posted a career-best 75.5 scoring average, good for fifth lowest in the league. Enright tied a career low with a 70 (2-under) in the final round of the Westbrook Invitational.
"Sophie and Camille have also been very consistent for us this year: Sophie 92 percent of the time and Camille 86 percent when playing for the team," Kuhle said about the upperclassmen. "They both have improved so much from their freshman year and this is Sophie's third all-league honor and Camille's first. It's fantastic, as their coach to see the hard work and competitiveness that these two have displayed and rewarded at the end of the year."
Bean has been very impressive in her debut season, posting a 76.75 scoring average, the second lowest by a Crimson and Gold freshman since the 2015-16 year. The former Vista Murrieta High standout has participated in all 10 events this year, including shooting a season-best 3-under 69 in the second round of the Ron Moore Women's Intercollegiate.
"
Alyson Bean has been consistent this spring and made the line up in every tournament this season," Kuhle said. "She's averaging 76.9 this spring, but I honestly think she's playing her best golf right now at the end of the season. She's matured so much this year with her course management, short game and trusting different shots. She's holing more putts than she did in the fall, and striking it the best I've seen her. This just shows the amount of work that she's put in is paying off and she's working in the right direction."
First round of the Summit League Championship is set to begin on Sunday.
