McCoy Hot as Pioneers Close out Day 1 of NCAA Regional

Freshman tied for 9th through one round
STANFORD, Calif. – The University of Denver men's golf team opened with a solid round on Monday at the NCAA Stanford Regional. The Pioneers posted a team score of 288, 8-over-par.
The Crimson and Gold started strong in its first appearance in the NCAA Regional in five years, finishing tied for 10th on the round, just six strokes off of fifth, the last of the qualifying positions.
Par for the 6,727-yard course was 70.
Head coach Erik Billinger went with the lineup of Cal McCoy, Esteban Missura, John Sand, Carson Griggs and Eric Hagen.
The top five teams and individual not on those teams will advance on the NCAA Championships.
No. 12-ranked Stanford is the leader in the clubhouse through one round on its home course and 6-under as a team, one stroke ahead of UNC Greensboro.
"Today was one of those days where we were so close to putting together a great team round," Billinger said. "Cal played awesome and shot a 68 and Hagen played really solid and shot 71. Tomorrow we just need to come out and have a complete team round to move up this competitive leaderboard. We believe and we are not afraid. Looking forward to tomorrow!"
For DU, McCoy again set the tone, getting off to a hot start, tying for ninth after day one of the tournament. The Highlands Ranch native nearly went bogey free on the afternoon committing just one on the fourth hole, but bounced right back with three birdies on between holes 7 through 10.
Hagen fired a 1-over 71 on his first run-through of the course to finish tied for 25th in the three-day event.
Sand wrapped up his day tied for 52nd at 4-over.
Griggs finished up tied for 60th.
Missura closed out the round tied for 67th.
Round two is set for Tuesday.
