Weinstein and Newlove named to All-Academic Summit League team

Newlove and Weinstein recognized for outstanding year in classroom

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. – The University of Denver golf team saw two of its players in Sophie Newlove and Mary Weinstein being named to the Summit Academic All-League team in release by the league on Wednesday.

It marked the first time that both have been selected to the team.

"Another well-deserved honor for these fantastic representatives of DU and our women's golf program," head coach Lindsay Kuhle said. "Sophie as captain and leader of the team this year understands the importance of both school and golf and succeeding in both. On this team she has pushed our players to work hard on and off the golf course and has led by example. She will be a four time WGCA academic all scholar and has received a 3.5 GPA or higher every year here at DU which is quite impressive."

Newlove has posted a 3.61 GPA at Denver as a finance major and is also a four-time WGCA All-American Scholar selection, one of only five players in program history to achieve the feat.

"Mary has set the bar extremely high on this team because of her success on and off the golf course," Kuhle added. "She leads in career stroke average here at DU and has the top GPA on our program the last two years at 3.98 with a perfect 4.0 this year.

"She works extremely hard on her golf game and in her classes. She is a wonderful example of what it is like to be a successful member of this team in the classroom and on the course because of her work ethic, communication skills, coachability and willingness to ask for help and the need to want to improve in every aspect. She continuously goes above and beyond to give her best effort. This is a very well-deserved honor for both players and I am extremely proud of how serious they take their golf and studies here at DU."

Weinstein, a 3.98 GPA and finance major, lead the Summit League with a 72.52 stroke average and broke a championship record with a final-round 65 (7-under).

The Pioneers will be back in action in the fall.
