OPELIKA, Ala. – The University of Denver golf team closed out day one of the NCAA Auburn Regional on Monday. The Pioneers fired a team score of 16-over (304).
DU finished up the round tied for 11th.
Par for 6,731-yard course was 72 at the Saugahatchee Country Club.
Head coach
Lindsay Kuhle went with the lineup of
Mary Weinstein, Sophie Newlove,
Camille Enright,
Alyson Bean and
Trussy Li.
Sixth-ranked Vanderbilt is the team leader through 18 holes of play at 1-under, three strokes ahead of No. 3 Duke in the 18-team field.
The top six teams and three individuals will advance on the NCAA Championships.
"Our freshmen and Mary were outstanding today," Kuhle said. "Having three scores at 4-over or better is really good on a championship course like this. We need to clean up holes 11 and 12 and find a solution on how to make solid pars on them the next two days as those two holes alone cost eight strokes of the scores that counted today.
"I'm really happy with our ball striking and putting and know that if we continue to stay patient with our putts and have good course management we will continue to improve on our team score."
The Crimson and Gold were led by Li, who posted a 2-over 74 on the afternoon, putting her in a tie for 20th. The freshman really found her groove on the back nine, going 1-under during the nine-hole stretch.
Weinstein wrapped up her day tied for 34th at 3-over. The Highlands Ranch native got stronger as her day went on, shooting 1-over on the final nine holes.
Bean was impressive in regional debut, firing a 76 to finish tied for 51st.
Enright closed out tied in 78th.
Newlove finished tied for 88th.
Round two is set for Tuesday.
