DENVER – Denver Pioneers men's hockey freshman forward Bobby Brink was selected by the Philadelphia Flyers in the second round (34th overall) of the 2019 NHL Draft on Saturday, June 22 at Rogers Arena in Vancouver, B.C. In addition to Brink, McKade Webster, who signed his National Letter of Intent last November, was selected by the Tampa Bay Lightning in the seventh round (213
th overall). This marks the 18
th consecutive year the Pioneers have had at least one student-athlete selected in the NHL Draft.
Brink had 35 goals, 33 assists and a +23 rating in 43 games for the USHL's Sioux City Musketeers last season. The Minnetonka, Minn. native was named USHL Forward of the Year in the same campaign after averaging 1.29 points per game to rank 14
th overall in USHL history. Brink's 35 goals tied a Sioux City franchise record and came in a season wherein he missed 19 games. Internationally, Brink represented the U.S. at the 2018 World Junior "A" Challenge and 2019 U-18 World Championship, winning a gold medal and tournament MVP in the former and helping the Americans to a bronze medal in the latter. He was recently selected to participate in the 2019 U.S. World Junior Summer Showcase.
Webster recorded two assists in an injury-shortened six-game season for the Green Bay Gambers (USHL) last year, but in the 2017-18 campaign the 5'10" 165-pound forward, had 11 goals, 19 assists and 49 penalty minutes through 58 games with Green Bay. The St. Louis, Missouri native had 66 points (28-38-66) and 32 penalty minutes with Shattuck St. Mary's U16 during the 2016-17 season.
Denver has seven NHL prospects on its roster for the 2019-20 season: Bobby Brink (Philadelphia Flyers),
Brett Stapley (Montreal Canadiens),
Ian Mitchell (Chicago Blackhawks),
Slava Demin (Vegas Golden Knights),
Cole Guttman (Tampa Bay Lightning),
Emilio Pettersen (Calgary Flames) and Magnus Chrona (Tampa Bay Lightning).
Brink is the highest selection for the Crimson & Gold since Henrik Borgstrom went 23
rd overall in 2016 and he ties Scott Mayfield (New York Islanders – 2011) for the eighth-highest selection in Denver's NHL Draft history. He becomes only the third Pioneer drafted by the Flyers, joining Tom Allen (1982) and Dave Hanson (1984). Since 1966, the Pioneers have had 114 picks in the NHL Draft, including 15 second-round selections. Thirteen Denver alumni played in the NHL during the 2018-19 season, culminating with Tyler Bozak and Chris Butler lifting the 2019 Stanley Cup with the St. Louis Blues.
