Pios Host 2019 Denver Classic to Open Campaign This Weekend

Denver will host San Francisco, Southern Miss and Seattle Friday and Saturday

THE PAST, PRESENT AND FUTURE                                           
•  Denver went 27-3 in 2018, a perfect 15-0 in Summit League play and rode a 24-match winning streak into the postseason before eventually falling to Utah in the NCAA Tournament a year ago.
• The Pioneers open up the 2019 campaign this weekend with the Denver Classic, welcoming San Francisco, Southern Miss and Seattle to the Mile High City. Denver is 76-4 inside Hamilton Gymnasium since the start of the 2014 season.
• Following the opening-weekend tournament, Denver will depart for Honolulu to participate in the 2019 Rainbow Wahine Invitational. The Pioneers will compete against Sacramento State (Thursday), Army (Friday) and Hawai'I (Saturday) in the three-day tournament.

Denver vs. San Francisco
    Fri., Aug. 30, 2019 •  6 p.m. MT (Altitude)
    Location: Denver, Colo.
    Overall: 2-2 | Last Meeting: Aug. 29, 2015 (L; 1-3)
Scouting San Francisco: The Dons enter the 2019 season after posting a 9-20 overall record and a 2-16 standing in the West Coast Conference. They return five starters from last years lineup. The Dons are led by Senior Kathya Garcia who led the team in kills last season (249) and ranked second in digs (257).
Last Meeting: The Pioneers faced the Dons back in August of 2015 in San Francisco in their third match of their 2015 campaign. USF took three of the four sets resulting in their first win of the season. The Dons out-hit the Pios .209-.158 on the night.

Denver vs. Southern Miss.
    Sat., Aug. 31, 2018 •  12 p.m. MT
    Location: Denver, Colo.
    Overall: 0-1 | Last Meeting: Sep. 14, 2002 (L; 1-3)
Scouting Southern Mississippi: The Golden Eagles enter their 2019 campaign after posting a 17-15 overall record and .500 win percentage in Conference USA. The Eagles will be starting fresh as they are returning zero starters from last year while adding seven freshmen to their squad.
Last Meeting: 
It has been 17 years since the last time these two teams met up. The Pios hosted the Golden Eagles on their home court and fell in four sets, 3-1 to continue their six-game losing streak. The Golden Eagles posted 67 kills and five blocks in the match. 

Denver vs. Seattle
    Sat., Aug. 31, 2018 •  7 p.m. MT
    Location: Denver, Colo.
    Overall: 1-1 | Last Meeting: Nov. 15, 2012 (W; 3-0)
Scouting Seattle University: 
Seattle enters their 2019 campaign after a losing season in 2018. The Redhawks posted an 11-19 record and 4-12 record in the Western Athletic Conference. With the addition of six freshmen to the squad they will return one starter from their 2018 lineup in Rachel Stark who led the team in kills with 254 and points with 303 in 2018.  
Last Matchup:
During their one season in the WAC back in 2012, the Pios took care of business during their last meeting with SU, sweeping the Redhawks in a 3-0 victory. Denver out-hit the Redhawks with 46 kills through three sets and walked away with 11 blocks. This was the second matchup of the year between the two. Seattle took the first match of the year 3-2.
