The University of Denver volleyball team earned its second win of the 2019 season in a 3-0 sweep against Southern Mississippi on Saturday afternoon.

The victory keeps the Pioneers undefeated while the Golden Eagles drop to 0-2 on the year.

Despite the Golden Eagles grabbing an early lead, DU battled back with the help of seven kills in set one from junior Lydia Bartalo. Bartalo, coming off an impressive performance in the season opener, used her stellar start to help trigger another big performance in consecutive days, finishing with a game-high 15 kills.

The Crimson and Gold found their groove in the second set, opening with a commanding 10-1 run to start. Southern Mississippi was unable to muster a comeback as Denver used three different 3-0 runs along the way to put themselves up two sets on the afternoon.

The Eagles showed some life in the third set, keeping things close throughout. Pio setters Ellie Anderson and Andrea Eddy continued to spread the ball effectively, combining for 34 assists through three sets and setting up six different Pios for kills in set three alone.

In attempt to overcome a late two-point deficit, freshman Ari Winters came up clutch with a pair of kills to seal the deal and secure the Denver sweep.

The Crimson and Gold return to action later tonight as they close out the Denver Classic facing Seattle at 7 p.m.
