Denver Falls to Colorado State in Extra Time

The Pioneers will return home to take on nationally-ranked Colorado September 21 at 7:30 p.m. MT

FORT COLLINS, Colo. – The University of Denver women's soccer team controlled the majority of the play, but fell to Colorado State 1-0 in extra time on Friday evening at CSU Soccer Field.

"I'm disappointed," head coach Jeff Hooker said. "We had plenty of possession, but we turned the ball over too easily, couldn't execute in the final third and overall, didn't produce the quality of chances we should have based on how much we controlled the pace of the game. We didn't raise our level at halftime, and we handed them a gift in extra time and they finished it to win the game."

Denver outshot Colorado State 15-8, including 10-2 in the opening 45 minutes. The best chance in the first half came in the 37th minute when the Pioneers were unable to take advantage of a bouncing ball in the box, despite getting a couple shots directed towards the frame.

The Pioneers took all four corner kicks of the match as well, and forced nine Colorado State saves in the match.

Colorado State won in the first period of extra time on a 95th-minute counter attack. Taylor Steinke got free shoulder to shoulder with a Denver defender and was able to slip in Caeley Lordemann for a 1v1 attempt. Lordemann buried her strike into the bottom left corner to win the game for the Rams.
