Denver Falls to No. 8/15 SMU in Overtime

The Pioneers will open Summit League play against Eastern Illinois next Saturday at 1 p.m. MT

DENVER – The University of Denver men's soccer team opened the scoring in the 84th minute, but conceded in the 89th and 94th to fall to [8/15] SMU 2-1 in extra time on Saturday evening at the University of Denver Soccer Stadium.

Junior attacking midfielder Josh Drack (Chandler, Ariz.) found the late breakthrough for the Pioneers with 6:49 to play in regulation, ripping a shot from outside the box into the bottom corner for his second goal of the campaign. Centerback Bailey Heller (Highlands Ranch, Colo.) cleared the ball long into Drack, who won the challenge and took several dribbles from the left side of midfield all the way to the top right of the box before uncorking his eighth collegiate goal.

SMU's Garrett McLaughlin equalized late for the visitors, lofting one with his back to goal over the diving outstretched arms of Will Palmquist (Denver, Colo.). Eddia Munjoma played the ball into the center of the penalty area to McLaughlin, who popped it up to waste level before taking a no-look shot that snuck just under the crossbar to level the match at 1-1.

The Mustangs 94th minute winner came off Munjoma's strike into the side netting from just outside the box. Nicky Hernandez tried to dribble through the center of the park, but was knocked off the ball by Denver captain Jacob Stensson (Stockholm, Sweden). Stensson's tackle saw the ball fall to the feet of Munjoma, who split Denver's defensive midfielders and fired the golden goal by Palmquist.

SMU held a 17-9 advantage in shots and a 7-3 edge in corners.
