Pioneers Sweep Montana to Close Thin Air Challenge

DENVER- Coming off a five-set comeback victory on Friday, the University of Denver volleyball team sealed their second win of the weekend with a sweep of Montana on Saturday.

The Pioneers improve to 8-4 on the season while the Grizzlies fall to 1-10 overall.

The Grizzlies put up a fight in set one exchanging points with the Denver offense to open the match. With the score deadlocked at nine, Ellie Anderson served up a string of kills to Lydia Bartalo and Tina Boe to give the Pioneers a three-point lead. Montana was able to cut into the lead at 18-22 but the Crimson and Gold held their own taking three of the final four points to steal the set one victory 25-19.  

DU jumped out to an early 7-4 lead in set two following a pair of kills from freshman Kalea Fobert. A 6-0 run midway through put the Pios on top 19-6. UM did their best to battle back, taking two points down the stretch but Denver denied their efforts, sailing to a 25-11 second set victory. Fobert recorded seven kills in the set leading her to a career high and team high eleven kills in the match while recording a .500 attack percentage.

Four blocks from freshman Brianna Green in the third frame helped lead the Pioneers to a third set victory. Starting off strong once again, Denver took an early lead and didn't take their foot off the pedal. A 3-0 and 4-0 run midway through put the Pios in position for the sweep. Last minute efforts by the UM came up short as Denver locked in the match at 3-0 following a 25-19 set-three victory.  

Green ended the match with a team high and career high of 10 total blocks.The Pioneers posted the most blocks in a three set match in the rally scoring era in program history with 15 total. Anderson building off a notable performance on Friday, locked in a team-high of 20 assists while Macy Carrabine and Bartalo led Denver in digs with ten each.  

DU will open Summit League play in Fort Wayne, Indiana on Friday as they take on Purdue Fort Wayne (5 p.m. MT).
