NORTHRIDGE, Calif. – The University of Denver women's soccer team capped off an unbeaten weekend with a 1-0 win at [RV/-] Cal State Northridge on Sunday afternoon at Matador Soccer Field.
"It was a bit of a shaky start in terms of us keeping possession," head coach
Jeff Hooker said. "Northridge is very well coached and was very organized, and they were able to disrupt us a bit early on. Sami's finish was very well taken, and I thought that we closed the game out really well in the second half by keeping the ball much better. Wins on the road are always difficult and keeping a shutout on the road against this Northridge team was impressive. Both goalkeepers were almost flawless with their actions and decision making to keep us organized. Now we head home and get ready for the start of Summit League play next weekend."
Denver took the lead in the 42
nd minute through sophomore
Samantha Feller's (Grand Junction, Colo.) third of the season and the 12
th of her 27-game Pioneer career. Classmate
Natalie Beckman (Denver, Colo.) recorded her first point of the season on the Pioneers' breakthrough, her 10
th assist in Crimson and Gold.
Beckman found Feller at the top of the box in the center of the pitch, and Feller got an outstretched foot on it to beat the centerback to the ball before burying the opener with her left foot to give Denver its first lead since September 8 at Portland.
Feller, who assisted on
Camryn MacMillan's (Littleton, Colo.) equalizer to start the road trip on Thursday night, scored on the 29
th of the month for the second time this season, netting Denver's dagger in a 3-0 win over then-No. 24 Texas.
Denver is now 8-11-0 against teams listed in the "other teams received votes" in the coaches' poll, including now 4-5-0 away from home.
The Pioneers first road victory of the season gets the program back to .500 in 2019 (4-4-2) ahead of the start of Summit League play.
Denver outshot Cal State Northridge 11-5, putting four of their 11 on target. The Pioneers also took six of the nine corners in the 90 minutes.
Redshirt-freshman
Nerea Arrazola (Issaquah, Wash.) made the first appearance of her collegiate career, earning a win, making her first save and splitting the shutout with senior captain
Brittany Wilson (Littleton, Colo.)
Freshmen
Sydney Sharp (Palos Verdes Estates, Calif.) and
Kaitlyn Glover (Englewood, Colo.) also made their debuts in Hooker's Starting XI on Sunday afternoon.
