HONOLULU- The University of Denver volleyball team remains undefeated this season following their 3-0 victory over Sacramento State in the opening match of the Rainbow Wahine Classic on Thursday.
The win moves the Pios to 4-0 on the year while handing the Hornets their third loss of the season to drop them to 2-3 overall.
The Crimson and Gold came out strong taking an early 10-5 lead over the Hornets in the opening set. With the help of a 4-0 run midway through, Denver remained in control to clinch the first set 25-16.
Using a pair of early spurts in set two, the Pioneers jumped out to a quick six-point lead at 9-3. It wasn't until midway through when a 6-0 Denver run led by a trio of kills from Freshman, Ari Winters propelled Denver to their second set victory, 25-16.
The Hornets buckled down in set three, pulling themselves within one at 7-6 early on but three kills coming from Lydia Bartalo was enough to help the Pios regain their momentum and take control with a 10-7 lead. The Crimson and Gold kept their foot on the pedal for the remainder of the set despite the offensive effort from the Hornets. Tina Boe who recorded a season-high and team-high eleven kills in the match, smashed three kills down the stretch in order to lead he Pioneers to a 25-21 victory and sweep of the Hornets.
Freshman Brianna Green showed up defensively once again for the Pioneers, recording a team-high and career-high five blocks. Ellie Anderson led the Pios in two categories offensively, recording 18 assists to go along with ten digs to lock in her first double-double of the year.
Denver returns to action on Friday against Army West Point (8:45 p.m. MT).
