HONOLULU- The University of Denver volleyball team locked in its fourth-consecutive sweep of the year, in a 3-0 win against Army West Point in their second match of the Rainbow Wahine Classic on Friday.
An offensive performance led by senior transfer
Amanda Green proved to be the difference for the Pioneers. Green, who ended the match with a team-high 10 kills and 12 digs, recorded her first double-double of the season. Her four kills in the opening set helped give the Pios their biggest lead of the night at 17-12. Denying the Black Knights of a late comeback, the Crimson and Gold held on to take the set 25-20.
After falling behind 6-3 to open set two, Denver went on a 7-0 run to regain momentum and put themselves on top 14-10 to force an Army timeout. Coming out of the huddle strong, Army battled back to tie things up at 16. The Pioneers refused to back down, clinching four of the final five points to win the set 25-21 and secure a 2-0 lead.
DU remained in control for the majority of the third set with the help of their defensive attack powered by freshman
Brianna Green who totaled a career-high and team-high nine blocks (seven assisted) on the night. The Black Knights battled down the stretch and found their first lead of the set at 24-23. The Crimson and Gold managed to fight off four set-points in a row to keep themselves alive with the help of a pair of kills from
Kalea Fobert and
Tina Boe before snagging the final three points to come out on top 29-27 and remain undefeated on the season.
Following her double-double performance on Thursday night, junior setter
Ellie Anderson continued to spread the ball effectively for the Pioneers, walking away with a team-high 15 assists.
Denver will have a day off before they return to action on Sunday (8:00 p.m. MT) to face Hawaii in the final matchup of the tournament.
