DENVER – The No. 2-ranked University of Denver women's gymnastics team scored a 196.750 in its home opener to top visiting Minnesota (196.475) on Sunday in Magness Arena.
Senior
Maddie Karr (Stillwater, Minn.) captured the all-around title with a 39.625 while also winning at least a share of the vault and bars titles. Sophomore
Alexis Vasquez (Arcadia, Calif.) won her second beam title in as many meets with a near-perfect 9.975, and junior
Lynnzee Brown (Kansas City, Mo.) added her second floor win of the season with a 9.925.
"It was a really strong home opener in front of a big DU crowd," head coach
Melissa Kutcher-Rinehart said. "We're ahead of where we were this time last year, and we'll continue to build confidence from that."
Denver opened the meet on vault where Karr's 9.900 tied for the event win and helped DU to a team score of 49.050, which was two tenths higher than the team's season opening score. Brown added a 9.850, and junior
Mia Sundstrom (Boulder, Colo.) was close behind with a 9.825. Freshman
AK Subject (Wayzata, Minn.) improved on her collegiate debut with a 9.750 while junior
Emily Glynn (Longmont, Colo.) also earned a higher score than in the season opener, posting a 9.725. Sophomore
Alexandria Ruiz (Lake Mary, Fla.) competed on vault for the first time this year, adding a 9.700.
Karr again led Denver on bars, scoring a meet-best 9.950 and narrowly missing her career high. Brown tied for third overall with a 9.875. Glynn's 9.850 marked another improvement over her season debut, and Subject matched her collegiate debut with a 9.825. Sundstrom and Ruiz rounded out Denver's lineup with a 9.800 and 9.775, respectively. DU's 49.300 team total on bars was also higher than in the season opener.
Vasquez followed up her perfect 10.0 from the team's first meet with a near-perfect 9.975 during Sunday's meet to win her second title of the year. In the leadoff spot, Brown tied her career high with a 9.900, which Karr matched later in the rotation. Ruiz's 9.775 and Sundstrom's 9.700 were DU's final counted scores, giving Denver a 49.250 final score.
Brown and Karr placed 1-2 in the final floor standings, scoring a 9.925 and a 9.875, respectively. Freshman
Amoree Lockhart (Fort Worth, Texas) made her first appearance in front of the DU crowd and scored a 9.800 to finish tied for fourth overall. Glynn and Ruiz each earned a 9.775 while Subject's 9.725 was an improvement over her performance at the Collegiate Challenge. DU finished with a 49.150 on floor, matching the season opener's score on the event.
Karr placed first in the all-around with a 39.625, and Brown was third with a 39.550. Ruiz, who was a mainstay in the all-around last season, also competed on all four events on Sunday.
The University of Denver women's gymnastics team, presented by Your Hometown Toyota Stores, travels to the SEC for the first time in 2020 with a trip to Arkansas on Friday, January 17.
