FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – The No. 3-ranked University of Denver women's gymnastics team posted its first score above the 197 mark on Friday, finishing with a 197.250 to top Arkansas (196.825) on the road.
It is the earliest that Denver has ever recorded a team score in the 197 range. Prior to Friday's meet, DU had never earned a 197 in the month of January.
Senior
Maddie Karr (Stillwater, Minn.) won her second consecutive all-around title with a 39.675 while also taking home titles on vault, bars and beam.
"It was a very confident and consistent performance," head coach
Melissa Kutcher-Rinehart said. "We hit 24 of 24 routines, and it was a complete and total team effort.
"I thought they were loose and energized. They stayed in the moment and excelled under pressure. We will continue to build off this performance and focus on the details."
Denver began the meet on bars, tying the eighth-highest score in DU history with a 49.425. Karr's 9.925 was the top bars score of the night, and juniors
Lynnzee Brown (Kansas City, Mo.) and
Emily Glynn (Longmont, Colo.) tied for second overall with 9.900s. Freshman
AK Subject (Wayzata, Minn.) improved on her top bars score with a 9.875, and junior
Mia Sundstrom (Boulder, Colo.) earned a new season's best with a 9.825. All six of DU's bars scores were at or above 9.800 with sophomore
Alexandria Ruiz's (Lake Mary, Fla.) 9.800.
The Pioneers continued to improve on vault from meet to meet, scoring two tenths higher than in their previous meet with a final tally of 49.250.
Lynnzee Brown and Karr both stuck their Yurchenko one-and-a-halves and scored matching 9.925s to share the event title. Sundstrom added yet another stick for Denver and was rewarded with a career-best 9.900 on her Yurchenko full. Subject, Ruiz and Glynn all added 9.750s.
Denver earned a 49.125 on floor, led by
Lynnzee Brown's team-best 9.925, which was the meet's third-highest score. Karr added a 9.900, and Ruiz had a 9.800 in the leadoff spot. Freshman
Amoree Lockhart (Fort Worth, Texas) scored a 9.775, and freshman
Emma Brown (Adel, Iowa) returned to the lineup with a 9.725 for DU's final counted score.
DU concluded the meet with a 49.450 on beam, which tied the eighth-best score in program history. Karr and sophomore
Alexis Vasquez (Arcadia, Calif.) scored matching 9.925s to share the event title.
Lynnzee Brown's 9.900 gave Denver a sweep of the podium while also tying her personal best for the second straight week.
Emma Brown made the beam lineup for the first time in her career, debuting with a 9.850 and tying with Ruiz. Once again, all of DU's scores were at or above the 9.800 mark with Lockhart's 9.825.
Karr and
Lynnzee Brown finished 1-2 in the all-around with a 39.675 and 39.650, respectively. Ruiz also competed on all four events and earned a 39.200.
