Three Top 11 Finishes Highlight Nordic Performance at Maloit Park

MINTURN, Colo. — The University of Denver ski team had three skiers finish between ninth and 11th Saturday at Maloit Park, continuing the team's own Denver Invitational with the Nordic portion some two weeks after the conclusion of the alpine meet in Aspen. The Pioneers currently sit in third place after the classic races with just one day of racing remaining in the meet.
Denver was second at the conclusion of the alpine meet, held Jan. 11-12 in Aspen, and slipped one spot to third with 410 points behind Utah (514) and Colorado (448) and head of Montana State (399) and Alaska Anchorage (327). The men picked up 55 points and the women 46 to score 101 on the day.
Two men's skiers finished in the top 11 with Bernhard Flaschberger picking up his first top 10 finish, taking ninth in the 10K classic race to open the morning. OleMarius Kirkeng, who led the Pioneers in both races last week in Steamboat Springs at the Colorado Invitational, was two spots back in 11th place for DU. The other Denver skiers struggled a bit with Nick Sweeney taking 24th, Jimmy Colfer 28th, Simon Zink 29th, and Evan Barbier 31st.
On the women's side, Vera Norli continued her solid season, taking 10th place in a field of strong women's skiers. She was the only DU women's skier in the top 25, however, as Emma Larsson (27th), Kristine Karsrud (28th) and Gracie Shanley (29th) continue to get back to full strength.
The DU Invitational will come to an end on Sunday with the freestyle races. The women will start the day at 9 a.m. (MT) with a 7.5K race and the men will follow at 10 a.m. with a 10K race. The race will be a pursuit race, meaning the top skiers from Saturday's action will get off to a head start on Sunday's race. There is a cutoff point at which all skiers will begin in a mass start.
After Sunday, two of the three regular-season meets will be complete. The Nordic squads will take part in a pair of races in Aspen as part of the Owl Creek Chase Feb. 8-9 before heading to Soldier Hollow for the Utah Invitational the next weekend.
