DENVER – The University of Denver has been selected as one of four host sites for the 2023 NCAA Regional Championships, the NCAA announced on Wednesday. Competition is set to be held April 6-8, 2023, in Magness Arena.
Joining Denver as 2023 NCAA Regionals hosts will be Oklahoma, Pittsburgh and UCLA.
In 2019, a new NCAA postseason format debuted, featuring three days of competition at NCAA Regionals. Nine teams compete at each site with the top two finishing teams in the regional final round advancing to the NCAA National Championships.
Denver was scheduled to host NCAA Regionals on April 2-4, 2020, prior to the cancellation of the postseason due to the coronavirus pandemic.
Magness Arena has hosted NCAA Regional competition four times, most recently in 2011. In 2007, Denver set its postseason attendance record with nearly 3,900 fans. DU's school record for attendance at a home meet stands at a sellout crowd of 6,100 fans on February 10, 2019. Denver has averaged more than 4,000 fans during the 2019 and 2020 seasons.
The Pioneers were ranked No. 7 in the nation at the time that the 2020 season was halted. In 2019, DU advanced to its first-ever NCAA Team Final where the Pioneers placed a program-record fourth overall. DU has qualified for 21-consecutive NCAA Regionals and was in position to do so again in 2020.
During Wednesday's announcement, the NCAA revealed the championship sites across 86 sports for the 2022-26 seasons. For women's gymnastics, four universities have been selected to host NCAA Regionals each year from 2023-26 while Fort Worth, Texas, has been announced as the host site for the NCAA National Championships through 2026.
