No. 9 Denver Handles Miami, 5-1

Omaha, Neb. – The No. 9 Denver Pioneers hockey team (2-3-0, 2-3-0-0) used a pair of quick second-period goals to take a lead and eventually beat the Miami RedHawks 5-1 on Thursday afternoon in Baxter Arena.

Quotable
"I did think they had a little more desperation in the first 10 minutes than we did...as the game wore on I thought we moved pucks better handling their pressure. It was a little bit different than other teams that we've faced so far and I thought our guys adjusted well to that and we stayed with it." - Richard and Kitzia Goodman Head Coach David Carle

Turning Point
After going into the first intermission tied 1-1, Ryan Barrow and Brett Stapley scored for the Pioneers at 1:31 and 1:46 of the second period. The goals separated by 15 seconds gave Denver its first lead of the game and an advantage they'd expand upon later in the game.

First Period
Miami started quick and Denver finished strong. The RedHawks made it 1-0 only 1:34 into the first period with Chase Pletzke scoring on a rebound from Robby Drazner's shot. The quick start kept Miami in a period where they were otherwise outplayed with the Pioneers outshooting the RedHawks 18-9 in the frame. Carter Savoie scored his sixth goal of the season with 1:02 left in the period as he capitalized on a broken pass from Mike Benning to beat Ben Kraws over the blocker.

Second Period
Denver jumped out to a two-goal lead less than two minutes into the second period. With goals separated by only 15 seconds, Barrow and Stapley made it a 3-1 game. Barrow gave the Pioneers their first lead of the day at 1:31 as he one-timed a pass from Steven Jandric out of the corner. On the following shift Stapley buried a loose puck from Barrow's shot Kraws thought he had covered. Denver managed to kill two penalties later in the period to continue its control of the game.

Third Period
The Pioneers limited the RedHawks to only six shots in the third period and scored twice more before the end of the game. Benning picked up his first career goal with a short-side shot on a two-on-one with Cole Guttman, then McKade Webster caught Miami on a line change, drove the defenseman wide and waited for Kraws to drop before tucking the puck behind him.
