No. 8 Pioneers Tie Broncos 3-3, Earn Extra Point in NCHC Shootout

Omaha, Neb. – The No. 8 Denver Pioneers hockey team (3-5-1, 3-5-1-1) tied the Western Michigan Broncos 3-3 and took the extra point in the NCHC standings with McKade Webster's shootout winner on Saturday at Baxter Arena.

Quotable
"I liked our pace. I liked our energy. I thought we were more connected on our breakouts. Our puck pressure was better in our first layer all over the ice. It led to more possession for us and I think the shots reflected that." - Richard and Kitzia Goodman Head Coach David Carle

Turning Point
Cole Guttman's power-play goal at 4:46 of the third period tied the game 3-3. Prior to the goal, Denver had trailed 1-0, 2-0 and 3-2 despite controlling play. The Pioneers ultimately outshot the Broncos, 49-20.

First Period
Denver outshot Western Michigan 16-7 in the first period, but an early odd-man rush kept the Broncos ahead at the break. Western Michigan took a lead only 2:35 into the game on a quick-developing two-on-one from the neutral zone. Ty Glover played a between-the-legs pass to Paul Washe at the red line and the Broncos transitioned to offense to set up Luke Grainger for a one-timer.

Second Period
The second period followed the same pattern as the first. The Broncos scored quickly and the Pioneers responded. Ronnie Attard's low-to-high one-timer put Western Michigan ahead 2-0 only 13 seconds into the period. Power plays gave the Pioneers life with Brett Edwards scoring on a shot from the left circle at 5:50, two seconds after Denver's first man advantage, and McKade Webster finding the back of the net on a wraparound to make it 2-2 at 9:20 of the period. Pioneer penalties mounted, however, and on the Broncos' fourth power play of the period they made good on their own man advantage with Drew Worrad making it 3-2 on a net scramble at 14:51. Shots were 34-18 for the Pioneers after 40 minutes.

Third Period
Denver maintained its heavy pressure in the third period to outshoot the Broncos, 13-1. The Pioneers tied the game 3-3 on the power play at 4:46 with McKade Webster collecting the carom from Carter Savoie's missed shot and finding Guttman alone on the back door. The game flew after the game-tying goal with no whistles from 12:16 to 19:36.

Overtime
Denver had a pair of shots in three-on-three overtime, but Pioneer defensive plays highlighted the extra period with Bo Hanson sprawling out to defend a two-on-one and Corbin Kaczperski skating from his net for a game-saving poke check.

Shootout
Kaczperski made three saves and Webster scored Denver's lone goal. Kaczperski's glove save on Josh Passolt in the first round was the highlight stop.
