Game Recap: Men's Ice Hockey |

No. 8 Pioneers Fall to No. 9 Huskies, 3-1

Omaha, Neb. – The No. 8 Denver Pioneers hockey team (3-6-1, 3-6-1-1) fell 3-1 to the No. 9 St. Cloud State Huskies on Sunday at Baxter Arena.

Turning Point
Veeti Miettinen's power-play goal from the right circle at 10:26 of the third period gave St. Cloud State its first lead of the game. The goal ultimately stood as the game-winner.

Quotable
"I really commend our league, the staff here in Omaha and all of the schools' administrations. To make this happen and pull it off shows an unbelievable commitment to our student-athletes, to our fanbases and to the tradition that we all have of playing high-level hockey. The experience was incredible." - Richard and Kitzia Goodman Head Coach David Carle on the NCHC Pod

First Period
It was an offensive and even first period with 28 shots combined, 16 for St. Cloud State and 12 for Denver, but neither team was able to generate a prime scoring chance. Both teams went 0/1 on the power play.

Second Period
The theme of a tight-checking, low-scoring game continued in the second period with only a pair of goals exchanged. Denver broke the deadlock at 8:35 with Cole Guttman collecting a loose puck in the neutral zone and feeding Carter Savoie off the rush for the freshman's seventh goal of the season. Denver's lead held for only 4:08 before Kyler Kupka intercepted a pass in the neutral zone and darted to the net for a give-and-go with Jared Cockrell. Kupka's goal made it 1-1 at 12:43.

Third Period
Miettinen rang a shot from the right circle off the crossbar at 5:30. Five minutes later on a St. Cloud State power play he had a second chance from the same spot and put it past Chrona's glove to give the Huskies their first lead of the game.  Chrona later denied Luke Jaycox on a one-timer from the bottom of the circle with less than seven minutes left and stopped a Huskie breakaway in the final minutes. The saves allowed Denver to stay in the game until Zach Okabe made it 3-1 with an empty netter at 19:01.

Significant Stats
-Savoie scored his seventh goal of the season & Guttman picked up his eighth point with an assist
-Chrona made 31 saves
