Game Recap: Men's Ice Hockey |

No. 1 North Dakota Tops No. 4 Denver 4-3 in OT

Omaha, Neb. – The No. 4 Denver Pioneers (0-2-0, 0-2-0-0) fell 4-3 to the No. 1 North Dakota Fighting Hawks in overtime on Friday at Baxter Arena.

Turning Point
Jasper Weatherby's goal with 4:26 remaining in regulation gave North Dakota its first lead of the game. The Fighting Hawks led for only 1:34 of the night before winning in overtime.

Quotable
"In big moments we played on our backhands through the middle of the rink and good teams like North Dakota are going to make you pay and they certainly did. They're a hard enough team to beat when you're everything right and when you feed into their transition game it makes things really difficult" – Richard and Kitzia Goodman Head Coach David Carle

First Period
The Pioneers played the first half of the period in their own end of the ice until Grant Mismash's cross-checking penalty put them on the power play at 10:19. After being shutout on a bevy of power-play scoring chances Wednesday night against Minnesota Duluth, the Pioneers' first power-play unit scored one minute into its first opportunity on Friday. Bobby Brink benefited from his original shot getting blocked as he found the puck at his feet in the slot and dished a pass to Carter Savoie who scored into a gaping net from the left circle to make it 1-0 at 11:05.

Second Period
Three Denver penalties tipped the momentum back in the Fighting Hawks' favor. North Dakota scored on its second power play of the period and third of the game at 17:16 when Jake Sanderson's one-timer from the top of the left circle beat Magnus Chrona to tie it 1-1. The Fighting Hawks outshot the Pioneers 14-5 in the period to take a 22-11 advantage through 40 minutes.

Third Period
Brett Edwards positioned the Pioneers nicely with a go-ahead goal 30 seconds into the frame. Brink saucered a pass to Edwards on Denver's first rush of the period and Edwards rifled a wrist shot over the blocker of Adam Scheel. The lead held until 13:03 when Ethan Frisch's wrist shot from the point beat Chrona to the stick side to make it 2-2. Frisch's goal withstood a lengthy video review for a potential major penalty as well as the Pioneers' challenge for too many men on the ice. North Dakota took its first lead of the night less than three minutes later with Jasper Weatherby capitalizing on a turnover inside Denver's end. Down 4-3 with 3:12 left, the Pioneers went back to the power play and it was Savoie again who received a pass upon Mike Benning's zone entry and sniped short side to tie the game and send it to overtime.

Overtime
Jordan Kawaguchi beat Chrona with a deke at the net and chip shot over his left shoulder 1:17 into three-on-three overtime.
