DENVER — After nearly six weeks since the last college race on the alpine side, the University of Denver will join cohorts from around the Rocky Mountain Intercollegiate Ski Association in Park City this weekend to put a wrap on the Utah Invitational and begin a three-week sprint to the end of the season.
WHO: The Pioneers will join the other alpine teams from around the RMISA in Park City for three FIS-U sanctioned races. Other teams expected to attend include Alaska Anchorage, Colorado, Colorado Mountain, Montana State, Utah and Westminster College.
WHAT: The 2020 Utah Invitational is the third of three regular-season meets in the western region. DU currently sits third with 282.5 points after the Nordic teams finished action at Soldier Hollow last weekend. Utah leads with 387 points followed by Alaska Anchorage with 317, and behind the Pioneers are Colorado (265.5), Alaska Fairbanks (195) and Wyoming (132).
WHEN: Races will take place Saturday through Monday. Saturday will feature giant slalom races and Sunday and Monday slalom competition. Sunday's slalom will count toward the meet standings and Monday's races will be an extra qualifier race.
WHERE: Park City Mountain Resort, venue for the 2002 Winter Olympics, will play host to the racing series.
WHY: DU boasts some of the top alpine talent in the nation and while Utah has a sizeable advantage and is skiing on their home course, there's no reason not to believe that the Pioneers can make a run for the meet title. Aside from that, it's another opportunity to strengthen qualification for the 2020 NCAA Championships, which are right around the corner.
After the Utah meet, the alpine teams will head immediately to Bozeman, Mont., where the RMISA Championships will take place Feb. 27-29, the same site as the NCAA Championships two weeks later on March 11-14.
