DENVER – The No. 5-ranked University of Denver women's gymnastics team welcomed a sold-out crowd of 2,585 to Hamilton Gymnasium on Saturday. The Pioneers combined to capture four of the five individual titles and had the meet's highest floor total in the team's competition against No. 15 BYU.
"I'm so incredibly proud of these young women," head coach
Melissa Kutcher-Rinehart said. "We have had our fair share of adversity over the last two weeks, and we're obviously making lineup adjustments. Right now, it's one meet at a time, but we will be where we need to be by postseason.
She added: "The team proved that grit is not just a word but an action. I'm so impressed and proud of how the team adjusted not just today but throughout the last two weeks."
The Pioneers started their meet on vault, led by 9.800s from junior
Emily Glynn (Longmont, Colo.) and senior
Maddie Karr (Stillwater, Minn.). Sophomore
Alexandria Ruiz (Lake Mary, Fla.) added a 9.775 while freshman
AK Subject (Wayzata, Minn.) led off the rotation with a 9.725. Freshman
Amoree Lockhart (Fort Worth, Texas) competed for the first time in her collegiate career on vault while fellow freshman
Victoria Fitts (Fort Collins, Colo.) made her first-ever appearance in an NCAA meet.
On bars in the second rotation, Ruiz tied the meet's highest score, earning a 9.875 in the lead-off position and capturing the second bars title of her career. Glynn's 9.850 and Subject's 9.800 were the second- and third-best scores for Denver while Karr added a 9.775. Lockhart and sophomore
Natalie Morton (Waycross, Ga.) each competed in the bars lineup for just the second time in their careers.
Denver began building momentum on beam, led by an event-winning 9.925 from sophomore
Alexis Vasquez (Arcadia, Calif.). Karr scored a 9.900, which was her third-consecutive beam mark at or above the 9.9 mark. Freshman
Emma Brown (Adel, Iowa) tied her personal best with a 9.850, which freshman
Callie Schlottman (Savage, Minn.) also earned in her first-ever collegiate lineup appearance. Lockhart's 9.550 kept Denver from counting a fall.
DU's strongest event of the night came on floor where Denver recorded a meet-high 49.350. For the second meet in a row, Karr tied her career high with a 9.950 to win the title. Glynn set a new personal best with a 9.900 in the team's first routine of the rotation. Ruiz tied for third overall after matching her season's best with a 9.875.
Emma Brown returned to the floor lineup for the first time since January 25 and scored a career high-tying 9.850, and Subject rounded out Denver's counted scores with a 9.800.
Karr captured her sixth all-around title of the season with a 39.425. Ruiz was third overall, and Lockhart competed on all four events for the first time in her DU career.
After the meet, Kutcher-Rinehart added, "Not having
Mia Sundstrom (Boulder, Colo.) and
Lynnzee Brown (Kansas City, Mo.) is a challenge. They are incredible athletes, but they both showed tremendous character. They were energetic, cheering and were fantastic teammates."
Denver finished second to BYU by a final score of 195.175-196.200.
The University of Denver women's gymnastics team, presented by Your Hometown Toyota Stores, travels to No. 1 Oklahoma for a Big 12 Conference showdown on Saturday, February 29, at 10:30 a.m. MT. The meet will be televised live on ESPNU.
