Pioneers Rack Up Top-3 Finish at Wyoming Desert Intercollegiate

Griggs ties for 13th
PALM SPRINGS, Calif. – The University of Denver men's golf team shot a 5-under (287) par in the final round of the Wyoming Desert Collegiate on Sunday. The Pioneers finished with a 3-under (861) to finish third out of 21 teams at the par-72, 7,305 yard Classic Club.
No. 19 Auburn won the tournament at 22-under (842).
DU did claim 18 head-to-head wins, highlighted by victories over No. 5 Colorado State and Colorado.
Head coach Erik Billinger went with the lineup of Cal McCoy, Carson Griggs, Jun Ho Won, John Sand and Connor Jones.
Griggs was the low finisher for the Crimson and Gold, tying for 13th at 2-under. The sophomore posted his second straight round of 72 on Sunday.
"The team fought hard this week and we took advantage of the opportunities we faced," Griggs said. "I feel that this week helped us and myself take ab ig step in the right direction heading into our next tournament."
Sand finished up tied for 28th at even par (216).
McCoy jumped up six spots on Sunday after firing a final-round 72 to post a three-day 219, good for 37th.
Won made a major move up the leaderboard with a 3-under 69 on the afternoon, closing out tied for 47th at 5-over with fellow teammate Jones.
Jackson Solem, competing as an individual, climbed eight spots after shooting 4-under (68) in the final round on Sunday. His three round score of 3-under (213) par was good for a team-high score and 11th-place finish.
"Great week down here in Palm Springs," Solem said. "Happy to have played well and excited to ride the momentum into Bandon."
Denver returns to action for the Bandon Dunes Championship on Mar. 8.
