NORMAN, Okla. – The No. 6-ranked University of Denver women's gymnastics team earned a 197.000 on Saturday in a showdown of two top-10 teams at No. 1 Oklahoma.
Senior
Maddie Karr (Stillwater, Minn.) scored her second perfect 10.0 on vault of the season on her way to a 39.725 all-around performance, which is the second-highest score at an away meet in program history.
"Resiliency is part of our culture," head coach
Melissa Kutcher-Rinehart said. "I'm incredibly impressed at the improvement within one week. Our lineups are starting to settle down, and people are stepping up in practice."
She added: "Don't count us out. We're at our best when we're facing and overcoming adversity."
Denver began its meet on bars where Karr captured her first of three event titles, tying for first with a 9.950. Sophomore
Alexandria Ruiz (Lake Mary, Fla.) and freshman
AK Subject (Wayzata, Minn.) each posted 9.850s while junior
Emily Glynn (Longmont, Colo.) scored a 9.825. Sophomore
Natalie Morton (Waycross, Ga.) added a career-best 9.625 to keep DU from counting a fall.
Karr capped off DU's vault lineup with her second perfect 10.0 of the season – and the third of her career. Despite competing five-up, five-count, Denver earned a 49.325 to match the team's highest score of the season. Ruiz and Subject each recorded new personal bests with a 9.850 and 9.800, respectively. Glynn was only .025 off her career high with a 9.850 as well. In just her second collegiate appearance, freshman
Victoria Fitts (Fort Collins, Colo.) scored a 9.825 for the team's fifth and final score on the event.
DU continued its momentum on floor, tallying a 49.275 with five counted scores at or above 9.800. Karr shared the event title with a 9.925 while Ruiz matched her season high with a 9.875. Freshman
Emma Brown (Adel, Iowa) earned a new career high with a 9.850 while fellow freshman Subject tied her personal best with a 9.825. Glynn led off the rotation with a 9.800.
The Pioneers finished the meet on beam with a 49.300, led by a 9.950 from sophomore
Alexis Vasquez (Arcadia, Calif.), which tied for second overall. Karr and freshman
Amoree Lockhart (Fort Worth, Texas) both earned 9.850s, which matches Lockhart's personal best. Brown and Ruiz had Denver's final counted scores with matching 9.825s.
Karr placed second overall in the all-around with her 39.725. It is the second-highest all-around score by a DU gymnast on the road and only .025 off Karr's own record of 39.750 from 2018. It also ties Denver's fifth-highest score all-time.
Ruiz, too, competed in the all-around and earned a 39.400, which is just .025 off her career high.
DU's 197.000 was second behind host No. 1 Oklahoma (198.450).
The University of Denver women's gymnastics team, presented by Your Hometown Toyota Stores, returns home on Sunday, March 8, for its final home meet of the regular season against Washington, San Jose State and Alaska.
