The Denver Pioneers hockey team presented by Centura Health tallied votes from every student-athlete and announced its 10 annual year-end awards for the 2019-20 season on Friday.
Barry Sharp Freshman of the Year: Bobby Brink
An unanimous selection for the NCHC All-Rookie team and a finalist for NCHC Rookie of the Year, Brink led the Pioneer freshmen, finished second in NCHC rookie scoring and T-15
th in NCAA freshmen scoring with 24 points in 28 games. His 11 goals ranked 8
th among NCAA freshmen. On the power play, the Minnetonka, Minn. native and Philadelphia Flyers prospect paced conference freshmen with 13 power-play points on six goals and seven assists. Brink had 77 shots, the second-most among NCHC freshmen, and finished the regular season with a +1 rating.

Murray Armstrong Most Improved Player: Kyle Mayhew
Mayhew more than doubled his production in nearly every statistical category from his freshman to sophomore season. After playing only 17 games last year, the Anaheim Hills. Calif. native was one of eight Pioneers to appear in all 36 games during 2019-20, recording one goal, four assists, 26 shots, 20 penalty minutes and a +15 rating, which tied for the team lead.

Dr. Ralph Verploeg Most Inspirational Player & Bill Masterton MVP: Ian Mitchell
Mitchell was named the Pioneers' first junior captain since 2014-15 on May 17, 2019 and led Denver from that point forward. The Calahoo, Alberta native and Chicago Blackhawks prospect finished the year with 10 goals and 22 assists in 36 games, tying for 6
th among NCAA defensemen in scoring, and had seven goals and 13 assists in 24 conference games, finishing 3
rd among NCHC defensemen in scoring. He was named First-Team All-NCHC and a finalist for NCHC Offensive Defenseman of the Year. In December, he helped Canada win the 2019 Spengler Cup as the youngest player on the roster.

Dallas Gaume Offensive Player of the Year: Emilio Pettersen
Named Second-Team All-NCHC and a finalist for NCHC Forward of the Year, Pettersen led the Pioneers with 35 points (13-22-35) in 36 games. His 35 points ranked T-4
th in scoring among all NCHC skaters and T-29
th in the NCAA. In conference games, Pettersen's 23 points ranked T-5
th. Pettersen scored 20 of his 35 points on the power-play, ranking second among NCHC skaters and 8
th in the NCAA. In addition to total points, Pettersen also led Denver with an average of .97 points per game and 103 shots.
Keith Magnuson Best Defensive Player: Griffin Mendel & Michael Davies
Davies, a back-to-back recipient of the Keith Magnuson Award, saw action in 34 games with one goal, four assists, 58 shots, a +9 rating and 20 penalty minutes. Mendel was one of eight Pioneers to appear in all 36 games, recording three goals, six assists, 49 shots, a +13 rating and 10 penalty minutes. Together, the tandem helped the Pioneers limit opponents to 2.25 goals per game, T-11
th in the NCAA.

Three Stars Award (Most "Three Star" Selections): Cole Guttman
Guttman was named among the Three Stars of the Game in eight games last season, being named First Star twice, Second Star four times and Third Star twice. In 35 games, the Los Angeles, Calif. native and Tampa Bay Lightning prospect had 28 points on 14 goals and 14 assists. In addition to his point totals, Guttman fired 87 shots, had a +2 rating and recorded 22 penalty minutes. He had seven multi-point games and six game-winning goals, T-1
st in the NCAA.

Dr. Ken Bredesen Sportsmanship Award: Griffin Mendel
One of eight Pioneers to appear in all 36 games, Mendel managed three goals, six assists, 49 shots and a +13 rating, ranking second on the team, while taking only 10 penalty minutes. His 0.28 penalty minutes per game ranked the third-lowest among Denver skaters with 30 or more games played. The Kelowna, B.C. native's nine-point season was the best in his three-year Pioneer career.

Bob Martin Community Service Award: Jack Doremus
For the second straight season, the Pioneers' lone Coloradan led the way in community initiatives. Doremus was the team's point man with the Headway Foundation, a non-profit aiming to combat concussions by promoting a safer sports culture. He was also the team's representative on the Student Athlete Advisory Committee, an organization which encourages community involvement through service projects, engaging with student organizations and development efforts.

Dr. Art Mason Memorial Top Scholar-Athlete: Erich Fear
Recently named the recipient of the fifth annual NCHC Postgraduate Scholarship, Fear received his Bachelor of Science degree in business administration (finance) from DU in March of 2019, finishing in three years with a 3.97 cumulative GPA. The Winnetka, Illinois native pursued a master's degree in accountancy during his senior season, compiling a 3.90 GPA and appearing in 20 games for the Pioneers. Fear is a two-time American Hockey Coach's Association (AHCA) All-American Scholar, four-time member of the NCHC Academic All-Conference Team and four-time NCHC Distinguished Scholar-Athlete for maintaining a GPA of 3.5 or higher in each year of competition. Last season, Fear was named to the Google Cloud Academic All-District Men's At-Large Team and received the NCAA Elite 90 Award as the student-athlete with the highest cumulative GPA participating at the 2019 Frozen Four. He is a three-time recipient of the Dr. Art Mason Top-Scholar Athlete Award.
