BOWLING GREEN, Ohio – The University of Denver women's gymnastics program combined for a 3.7967 grade point average, the top GPA in program history, and the ninth-ranked GPA in the country in 2019-20. Following a seventh place finish in the final rankings of a shortened 2020 season, Denver is the only program in the country to finish 2019-20 in the top-10 both academically and athletically.
Denver's 2019-20 team grade point average edged out its 3.736 from 2006-07, a program record under head coach
Melissa Kutcher-Rinehart, which ranked second in the country that season.
"I'm so proud of these young women, and how they excel as true student-athletes," Kutcher-Rinehart said. "I admire and respect their dedication to excellence academically and athletically. Their ability to adapt academically and personally with all the shifts in schooling and training due to COVID has been impressive to witness."
The Pioneers had 11 student-athletes earn a 3.5 grade point average and earn WCGA Scholar All-America honors.
Emma Brown,
Lynnzee Brown,
Victoria Fitts, Emily Glynn, Maddie Karr, Natalie Morton, Alexandria Ruiz, Callie Schlottman, AK Subject, Mia Sundstrom and
Alexis Vasquez all earned the prestigious honor on Tuesday.
Karr and Sundstrom have now earned the honor three times in their career, while Morton, Ruiz and Vasquez each earned the honor for a second time. To be eligible for WCGA scholastic honors, student-athletes must have achieved a GPA of 3.500 or higher for the 2019-20 academic year or cumulative for their time at DU.
"Our team's constant pursuit towards excellence has been showcased by our recent achievement of becoming the only NCAA Women's Gymnastics program to be ranked in the top-10 for both athletics and academics in the 2019-20 school year," Brown and Vasquez shared in a joint statement. "It is humbling to see our team's resiliency and dedication paying off."
