DENVER – The Denver Pioneers hockey team mourns the loss of DU Athletics Hall of Famer (Class of 2001)
Marty Howe, who passed away at age 83 in Scottsdale, Ariz., on August 15.
Howe was a two-time All-American under Murray Armstrong, having been named the program's most outstanding defenseman for the title winning team in 1960 and earning NCAA All-Tournament Team honors in National Championship seasons in 1960 and 1961.
Growing up in Regina Saskatchewan, Canada, Howe began to find his hockey talent on the ponds and streets of his hometown, talents that led to a scholarship to DU, an extremely successful collegiate career and a degree in accounting.
A two-time All-WCHA First Team honoree, Howe is the seventh-leading goal-scorer among defenseman in Denver hockey history. Howe holds the second-fastest goal in the DU record book, scoring eight seconds into a WCHA battle at Michigan Tech on December 16, 1960. He is also one of just 11 blueliners to net a hat trick in Denver hockey history (Colorado College – Feb. 4, 1961).
In 76 games as a Pioneer, Howe finished with 80 points on 32 goals and 48 assists. Howe continued his hockey career playing on the US Olympic Team in 1960, highlighted by a win against the Russian National Team during the height of the Cold War. His hockey legacy culminated with 26 games in the AHL with the Pittsburgh Hornets and 174 games in three seasons in the WHL with the San Francisco Seals, Vancouver Canucks and the Denver Invaders.
Howe met his future wife and 1959 Miss Colorado Diane while skating for the Pioneers. Marty left behind his daughters Vanessa Howe, Melissa Howe-Croaker and Deidre Howe-Walker. In addition to his children, Howe is survived by their spouses: Todd, Trent, and Todd, grandchildren Ashley, Hunter, Mason, Austin, Mac, Savannah and Sienna, and his two great-granddaughters, Jaidyn and Charlea Lou.
