Pioneers Notch 1,500th Victory in 6-1 Win

Denver, Colo. – The Denver Pioneers (4-7-1, NCHC 4-7-1-1) beat Colorado College 6-1 for the program's 1,500th victory on Saturday at Magness Arena.

Turning Point
Starting at 3:37 of the third period, Denver scored three goals in less than four minutes to take a commanding 6-1 lead.

Quotable
"It's a huge honor. It's a great program that we're so happy to be a part of and so grateful to be a part of. We stand on the shoulders of the many who have come before us. To get this for our program is an unbelievable accomplishment." - Richard and Kitzia Goodman Head Coach David Carle

First Period
Denver brought the pressure in a penalty-filled opening frame and took the lead as a result. On the first of the Pioneers' two power plays in the period, Brett Stapley took a drop pass from Antti Tuomisto, entered the offensive zone and blew a wrist shot past Dominic Basse to make it 1-0. Denver went 3/3 on the penalty kill in the opening frame.

Second Period
The Pioneers went back to the well in the second period with another power-play goal. Carter Savoie's one-timer made it 2-0 at 7:12. Denver nearly extended its lead five minutes later on a two-on-one rush, but Basse's save set up Colorado College for Brian Hawkinson's goal in transition. The one-goal lead doubled with 11 seconds remaining in the period as McKade Webster curled around the net and found Reid Irwin creeping in from the point for his first career goal.

Third Period
Slava Demin, Irwin and Stapley scored in a 3:32 span at the start of the third period to give the Pioneers a five-goal lead. Demin's wrist shot from the top of the zone made it 4-1 at 3:37 of the period, Irwin tacked on another at 5:09 and Stapley benefited from a timely exit from the penalty box as he carried the puck from the neutral zone to the net before beating Matt Vernon five-hole. Vernon replaced Basse after the Pioneers' fifth goal. Jack Caruso replaced Corbin Kaczperski in Denver's net for the final 3:05.
