No. 19 Denver Defeats No. 11 Omaha, 4-1

Omaha, Neb. – The No. 19 Denver Pioneers (6-8-1) defeated the No. 11 Omaha Mavericks 4-1 with the help of four different goal scorers on Saturday at Baxter Arena.

Turning Point
Hank Crone's go-ahead goal at 1:03 of the second period put Denver in front for the second time in the game. The quick goal to start the frame stood as the game winner.

Quotable
"I liked a lot of parts of our game. I thought defensively we were pretty good and didn't give up a ton. Offensively I thought we got better as the game went on at possessing pucks and extending plays. That's a good team over there and I thought it was pretty tight-checking both ways." - Richard and Kitzia Goodman Head Coach David Carle

First Period
Antti Tuomisto scored his first NCAA goal the hard way. Pressuring on the penalty kill, Tuomisto jumped on a loose puck created by the Pioneers' forecheck and fired a wrist shot from the slot past Isaiah Saville's blocker to make it 1-0 at 13:52 of the first. The lead lasted only 17 seconds. Omaha's fourth line responded on the next shift with Matt Miller taking a pass from the left-wing boards and snapping a quick shot to tie the game.

Second Period
Scoring plays bookended a slow second period where, despite the choppy pace, the Pioneers outshot the Mavericks, 14-6. Denver extended its lead only 1:03 into the second period. Tuomisto started the play by finding Bobby Brink with a pass from the defensive zone to the far blue line. Brink fed Hank Crone streaking to the net to make it 2-1. At 17:42, Savoie scored the rebound from Cole Guttman's net drive to give the Pioneers a two-goal advantage before the second intermission.

Third Period
Denver's forecheck produced again at 3:21 with Steven Jandric disrupting Omaha's breakout and slipping a pass for Jaakko Heikkinen to finish. The 4-1 lead held as the Pioneers managed to kill a trio of penalties to finish the game with the help of Corbin Kaczperski, who made 23 saves in the win.
