Pios Fall in Five-Set Thriller to Mavs

DENVER – The University of Denver Volleyball team saw its six-match winning streak come to a close on Saturday, falling in five sets to Omaha (25-21, 25-27, 18-25, 25-23, 16-18) in Hamilton Gymnasium. The Pioneers fell to 18-3 (9-2 SL) in the loss, and the Mavericks got the season sweep with the victory.

Turning Point
Omaha scoring the final two points in the fifth set.

1st Set
Denver shook off a sluggish start to take a 10-6 lead early, forcing the Mavericks to take a timeout. The Pioneers pushed their lead to five at 17-12 on a kill from Andrich, causing Omaha to take another timeout. Denver put it away 25-21 on a kill from Hailey Green.

2nd Set
Second set opened tight, with neither team getting separation. Omaha used a mini 3-0 run to take a 12-9 advantage, causing the Pioneers to take their first timeout of the match. The Mavericks built their lead to as many as five at 15-10, but DU fought back with a 6-3 run to make it 18-16. Ellie Anderson tied it up at 19-19 with an ace, the fourth of the afternoon for the Crimson and Gold. A late push from Omaha got them the set, 27-25.

3rd Set
Third set started 5-5. Denver got up 12-10 after a kill from Bartalo, her 10th in the contest. The Mavericks countered with a 7-2 run after that to go up 17-14, resulting in a timeout from DU. Omaha pulled away after that, taking the set 25-18.

4th Set
Denver came out fast to start, going on an 8-3 run. The Pioneers' lead grew to as many as six at 16-10 after an attack error from the Mavericks. Omaha used a late set run to get back to within one but Denver kept itself alive, taking the set 25-22.

5th Set
The Crimson and Gold used a mid-set run to build a four-point advantage at 12-8. Omaha, though, rallied, taking the lead at 15-14 on a kill from Sadie Limback. The Mavericks went on to take it from there, winning 18-16.
