DENVER – The No. 14 University of Denver hockey team completed the weekend sweep of the No. 9 Western Michigan Broncos on Saturday night, winning 5-2 at Magness Arena.
The Pioneers (6-4-0, 2-2-0 NCHC) improved to 5-0-0 on home ice this season, their best start ever since beginning 4-0-1 the 2018-19 campaign. This is the first time since Magness Arena opened in 1999-00 that Denver has won each of its first five home games. WMU drops to 6-4-0 on the year and 1-3-0 during NCHC play.
Carter Savoie scored twice in 20 seconds late in the middle period and
Cameron Wright tallied with just six-tenths of a second remaining before the second intermission to turn a tightly-played, one-goal game into a 5-2 advantage on the scoreboard for the Pioneers.
Carter Mazur and
Bobby Brink also found the back of the net in the contest, with Brink adding an assist on Savoie's second tally. Defenseman
Mike Benning finished with a multi-point outing as well with two helpers.
Savoie's two goals technically came on the same shift and marked the third-fastest consecutive goals by the same Denver player in the last 20 years.
Jack Doremus tallied twice in 17 seconds on Feb. 23, 2019 versus Miami, while Jarid Lukosevicius scored two times in 16 seconds during the 2017 NCAA National Championship Game versus Minnesota Duluth.
DU goaltender
Magnus Chrona started for the fourth consecutive outing and picked up the win by making 25 saves on 27 shots, improving his record to 5-3-0 on the campaign.
The Pioneers outshot the Broncos 32-27 in the contest, the ninth time in 10 games this season they've held an opponent to 30 of fewer shots on goal.
Denver answered every time Western Michigan scored, as Mazur tallied 67 seconds after Max Sasson's opening goal at 9:36 of the first frame and then Brink found the back of the net on the power play with a seeing-eye wrister that went top shelf at 6:55 of the second period.
The Pios finished 1-for-6 on the power play, while WMU went 1-for-5.
DU continues its season-long, four-game homestand next weekend as the team hosts the Miami RedHawks on Friday and Saturday night.
