DENVER – The University of Denver women's basketball team dropped the middle game of its five-game homestand by a count of 67-43 against Colorado State on Thursday night at Hamilton Gymnasium.
Inside The Box Score:
Uju Ezeudu led the Pioneers with 15 points on 5-of-9 shooting from the field and a 5-for-6 night at the free-throw line.
Indeya Sanders,
Tess Santos and
Joclyen Wyatt all finished with six apiece. Santos finished with six points, three rebounds, two assists, two steals and two blocks in 33 minutes.
Ezeudu and
Makayla Minett led the Pioneers on the glass with six apiece, and Minett added two blocks to her stat line.
McKenna Hofschild led the Rams with 27 points, six rebounds and three assists.
First Quarter:
Both teams started slowly from the field with Ezeudu getting the first field goal of the game, following two Colorado State free-throws, scoring with 2:25 into the contest. Sanders was the one being left open for the Pioneers in the first quarter as the transfer took seven of the Pioneers 12 shots in the opening quarter. Sanders led the Pios with six points and Ezeudu had four in the first.
Hofschild led the Rams in the first quarter with nine points, one of six players to score for Colorado State and the visitors took a 19-10 lead into the second.
Second Quarter:
The Pioneers trimmed the lead to eight at the intermission, thanks in large part to six points on two triples off the bench from Wyatt. Ezeudu doubled her output with four more points to bring her first-half total to eight.
Colorado State outrebounded the Pioneers by eight, but after giving up over 20 offensive rebounds in Monday's loss to Wichita State, the Pioneers limited the Rams to just three second chances in the first half on Thursday.
The Rams took an eight-point lead to the locker room at 33-25.
Third Quarter
Colorado State broke the game open in the third quarter, outscoring the Pioneers 22-8 in the period, shooting 9-for-16 from the field while limiting the Pioneers to just 3-of-14.
Tess Santos netted her second three of the middle quarters to bring her total to six. Ezeudu added three more to get to double figures with 11.
Fourth Quarter:
Denver's offense was held to 10 points or less for the third quarter on the evening, shooting 4-for-15 in the final frame to finish the game at 28.6% (16-of-56). Ezeudu had four more points in the third, making a bucket and shooting her final two free-throws of the night in the fourth.
Minett had four rebounds and a blocked shot in the final 10 minutes.
Notes:
- Uju Ezeudu finished with double figures(15) for the sixth straight time, and the 38th time in her career
- The Pioneers are now 4-9 when shooting under 40% under head coach Doshia Woods.
- Ezeudu shot all of the Pioneers free-throws on Thursday (5/6) 83%
What's Next:
The Pioneers will have a week off before hosting their annual Thanksgiving tournament. Tulane and Wyoming will clash in the first game on Friday, November 26, at 1 p.m. MT. The Pioneers will follow the opener against Texas A&M Corpus Christi at 3:30 p.m. MT. TAMCC will battled Tulane on Saturday (Nov. 27) at 1 p.m., before the Pioneers take on Wyoming at 3:30 p.m. MT.
