Jackson’s DI School Record 36 Leads Denver Past Texas A&M Corpus Christi

Jackson had a game-high 36, including 10 triples, to lead the Pioneers past the Islanders 87-65

DENVER  – Senior guard Anna Jackson hit 10 triples and scored a University of Denver women's basketball Division I school record 36 points to lead the Pioneers past Texas A&M Corpus Christi 87-65 on Friday afternoon at Hamilton Gymnasium.

Inside The Box Score:
The school record watch didn't stop with Jackson's point total. Jackson's 10 three-pointers made, tied Morgan Van Riper Rose's 10 triples against Air Force in December of 2014, and the Pioneers 19 made triples as a team tied the Division I school record that was also set that day. After starting the game 2-for-10 from beyond the arc in the first quarter, the Pioneers made 17 of their final 34 (50%).

Jackson's 36 points came on 12-of-19 shooting and 10-for-17 from beyond the arc. Fellow starting guard Meghan Boyd had 25 with five more made triples. Tess Santos finished in double figures as well with 14 to go with five assists and two steals.

As a team, the Pioneers had 23 assists on 29 made field goals.

First Quarter:
Denver got off to a slow start, missing its first five shots including four three-point attempts before Santos knocked down a right wing triple off a post-feed from Uju Ezeudu to cut Denver's first-quarter deficit to 5-3, 3:02 into the contest.

The Pioneers used a 9-0 run capped off by a gritty offensive rebound by Makayla Minett who dove to the floor, picked up the rebound in-between two defenders and from the floor, found Mary Wilson in the corner who buried a three to give Denver its first lead at 14-11 with 2:26 to play in the opening quarter.

Santos led the Pioneers with seven in the first quarter and Boyd chipped in four, but the Islanders took a three-point lead into the second at 17-14.

Second Quarter:
The Pios opened the second quarter on a 7-2 run forcing an Islanders timeout 1:41 into the quarter. Boyd got an early five points and then Cheyenne Forney, who came off the bench to start the second quarter, got a block on the defensive end, and then ran the floor to get a wide-open layup in transition to force the timeout.

Jackson was the story of the middle stages of the second quarter, connecting on four triples in the frame, scoring all 16 of her first half points in the second 10 minutes.

Boyd connected on two threes in the quarter to finish the first half with 14. Alecia Westbrook led the Islanders with 15 in the first half.

Third Quarter
Jackson hit her first two triples to start the third, sandwiched around a Santos three to push Denver's lead to 10 at 53-43 and force a Corpus Christi timeout with 7:35 to play in the third.

The two teams shared the next 16 points eight apiece to make it 61-51 at a Denver timeout with 2:19 to play, and the Islanders eventually trimmed the Pioneers lead down to seven at the end of the quarter.

Jackson had another 11 to lead the Pioneers in the stanza, and Santos chipped in another five to become the Pioneers third double-figure scorer on the afternoon.

Fourth Quarter:
Indeya Sanders and Jackson got Denver going again from beyond the arc, hitting Denver's first two attempts of the fourth quarter to push the Denver lead back to 13.

Jackson would go on to hit two more triples to bring her total in the quarter to three and her total in the game to 10 to continue to stretch out the Pioneers lead. Boyd hit two more threes in the quarter to bring Denver's total to six in the frame to tie the DI school record for 19-made triples in the contest.

Ezeudu had nine of her 10 rebounds in the fourth to get to double digits in the category.
