DENVER – The No. 11 University of Denver hockey team remained undefeated on home ice this season after the Pioneers won 7-1 against the Miami University RedHawks on Saturday night at Magness Arena.
Denver is 7-0-0 at Magness, the program's best start to a season on home ice since also winning its first seven outings in the 1977-78 campaign (7-0-0).
The Pioneers now head into their second bye week of the year before opening a four-game road trip with a pair of contests at Arizona State on Dec. 3-4 and Minnesota Duluth on Dec. 10-11. Denver's next home series is against Alaska Fairbanks on Dec. 31 and Jan. 1.
Freshman
Carter Mazur scored twice for the Pios on Saturday, while sophomore
Mike Benning (one goal, two assists) and freshman
Carter King (three assists) each recorded a career-high three points.
Bobby Brink (one goal, one assist), Conor Caponi (two goals) and
McKade Webster (one goal, one assist) also had multi-point outings, and junior goaltender
Magnus Chrona stopped 14-of-15 shots.
Chrona started for the sixth-straight game and picked up his fourth consecutive victory and the 30th of his career. He only allowed two total goals in the weekend set, with Miami's Jack Olmstead breaking his shutout bid on Saturday with an outside shot through traffic at 2:07 of the third period.
Mazur opened the game's scoring for the second night in a row on a coast-to-coast sequence that saw him split two Miami defenders and bury a shot top shelf, extending his goal streak to four games. The Jackson, Michigan, native now has seven tallies on the year, tied for second on the roster with fellow freshman
Massimo Rizzo.
The Pioneers opened up the game in the second period with four tallies, beginning with a short-handed marker from Webster during a 2-on-1 with
Carter King following a faceoff win in the defensive zone. Mazur, Caponi and Brink then all took advantage of rebounds in front of RedHawks netminder Logan Neaton to give DU a comfortable 5-0 lead heading into the second intermission.
Brink added to Denver's lead with a backhand shot that went top corner with 6:35 remaining in the third stanza and Caponi added the Pios' second goal shorthanded with 61 seconds to play, picking up his first career multi-goal outing.
DU outshot Miami 48-15 in the contest, holding the RedHawks to only three and four shots in the first and second periods, respectively. The 15 total shots against were the fewest allowed by the Pioneers this season.
