TEMPE, Ariz. – Senior
Brett Stapley scored three times, freshman
Jack Devine tallied his first collegiate goal and the No. 12 Denver Pioneers hockey team stretched its winning streak to five games with a 6-2 victory against the Arizona State Sun Devils on Friday night at Oceanside Ice Arena.
The win ended DU's four-game losing streak on the road and marked the third victory of the year against ASU. The Pioneers (9-4-0, 4-2-0 NCHC) swept the Sun Devils (7-8-0) in their season-opening series on Oct. 8-9 at Magness Arena.
The teams wrap up their weekend set in the desert on Saturday at 7 p.m. MT.
Stapley's hat trick was the first of his career, and he also added an assist—the 50th of his collegiate career—for a four-point night and setting a new personal best for a single game.
Cameron Wright and
Carter Savoie also scored for Denver, and goaltender
Magnus Chrona made 31 saves to push his winning streak to five contests as well.
Devine (goal and assist), Wright (goal and assist),
Bobby Brink (two assists),
Carter Mazur (two assists) and
Massimo Rizzo (two assists) joined Stapley with multi-point nights.
Denver led 2-0 heading into the third period and doubled its lead in the first 5:11 of the final frame on markers from
Carter Savoie and Stapley. Stapley completed the hat trick with 2:18 left, finding the back of the net off a cross-pass from
Massimo Rizzo.
Rizzo setup Devine's first goal with 43 seconds left in regulation on another slick pass that led to a one-time tally from the left circle.
Colin Theisen ended Chrona's shutout bid at 5:25 of the third period and Jordan Sandhu scored shorthanded with 2:15 remaining for ASU. The Sun Devils outshot the Pioneers 33-29 in the game, marking just the second time this season DU allowed more than 30 shots in a contest.
Denver went 2-for-4 on the power play and 4-for-4 on the penalty kill. The Pios were perfect on the PK for the second consecutive game and the third time this season, and they have now killed off a season-best 11 straight penalties.
