Game Preview: Pios Set to Host 2021 Denver Classic

The Pioneers will close out their five game homestand this weekend with a holiday tournament

DENVER  – The University of Denver women's basketball program will host the 2021 Denver Classic this weekend, welcoming Tulane, Wyoming and Texas A&M Corpus Christi to Hamilton Gymnasium.  
 
The Four W's

What: Game 5 of the 2021-22 Season
Where: Denver, Colo. (Hamilton Gymnasium)
When: November 26, 2021 – 3:30 p.m. MT
 
Last Time Out:
Junior Uju Ezeudu had 15 points on five-of-nine shooting to lead the Pioneers, but Denver fell 67-43 in an intra-state match-up against Colorado College on Thursday night at Hamilton Gymnasium.
 
DI Series History:
The Pioneers are 1-1 against the Islanders in their Division I history, having not met since the 2001-02 season. Denver won the first meeting a year prior 64-49 in the Mile High City, before dropping a one-point game in Corpus the following season.

Denver will have a quick turnaround when it takes on Wyoming on Saturday at 3:30 p.m. MT.  
 
Team Notes:
  • Head Coach Doshia Woods has a 8-19 record, in her second season in 2021-22.
    • Prior to Denver, Woods spent 10 seasons on the Tulane women's basketball staff.
  • Denver returns three starters from last year's team. Meghan Boyd and Uju Ezeudu started 20 games apiece, while Anna Jackson started 19 last season.
    • The trio combined for 41.4 points and 15.7 rebounds per game.
    • DU's three returning leaders have combined to average 33.9 points and 15.1 rebounds per game this season.
  • The Pioneers feature six newcomers, including three freshmen and three transfers.
    • Tess Santos had nine points in her Crimson and Gold Debut Tuesday, all in the second quarter, in Denver's loss to Air Force.
    • Indeya Sanders had eight assists to go with eight points in Denver's loss to Wichita State on Nov. 15.
  • Denver's Ezeudu had 17 rebounds in the Pioneers home opener on November 12, tied for the fifth most in a game in Denver's Division I history and tied for the 10th most in a game in the country this season (thru Nov. 18).
  • The Crimson and Gold were picked fifth in the Summit League Preseason Poll after earning the No. 6 seed in last year's tournament.
    • Ezeudu and Boyd were named to the Summit League Preseason Second Team.
