GRAND FORKS, N.D. – The No. 11 University of Denver hockey team fell 4-1 to the No. 8 University of North Dakota Fighting Hawks on Saturday to wrap up the weekend series at Ralph Engelstad Arena.
The outing marked the end of a four-game road trip and a stretch where DU played five-of-six away from Magness Arena. The Pioneers (4-4-0, 0-2-0 NCHC) now return to Denver to begin a four-game homestand, starting with a series versus the Western Michigan University Broncos on Friday.
Senior
Ryan Barrow scored for the Pioneers at 6:24 of the second period, while freshman
Jack Devine and senior
Brett Stapley picked up assists on the sequence after DU executed a nice breakout into the UND zone.
North Dakota (6-3-0, 2-0-0 NCHC) led 2-0 heading into the second period as Matteo Costantini and Tyler Kleven scored twice in the opening period. The Hawks added two more tallies in the third frame, including an empty-netter with 2:19 remaining.
The teams combined for 58 penalty minutes, with 44 of them occurring in the final 3:12 of the game.
Goaltender
Magnus Chrona started for the second consecutive night for the Pios and made 24 saves on 27 shots. North Dakota outshot Denver 28-22.
This weekend marked the only two games that Denver and North Dakota will play against one another during the regular season, as the Fighting Hawks are the only NCHC team that won't visit Magness Arena this year.
