DENVER – The University of Denver alpine ski team wraps up its pre-season competitions on Wednesday and Thursday as the Pioneers participate in the annual Holiday Classic at Howelsen Hill Ski Area in Steamboat Springs, Colorado.
Denver has taken part in two Nor-Am Cups recently as part of their pre-season training, the first of which was at Copper Mountain in November. Last week, DU was at the North American tour's stop in Panorama, British Columbia, which saw Cooper Cornelius finish first and second, respectively, in the men's giant slalom events on Friday and Saturday, and
Reece Bell take second place in Saturday's women's slalom.
The Holiday Classic features two days of men's and women's slalom races. On Wednesday, the first runs taking place at approximately 1 p.m. before the finals later that night under the lights. The event wraps up under the sun on Thursday with more slalom action.
The Steamboat Springs Winter Sports Club hosts the annual Murphy Roberts Holiday Classic, which was renamed in honor of a former SSWSC alpine skier who passed away unexpectedly at the age of 22 in 2016. The race attracts a strong national field and features prize money.
DU begin the 2022 RMISA season on Jan. 2 with the Nordic skiers competing at the Utah Invitational. The alpiners start their collegiate campaign at the Montana State Invitational on Jan. 18.
