BURLINGTON, Iowa – Junior
Sami Feller netted the fifth brace of her career to lead the University of Denver women's soccer team to a 4-0 win over Western Illinois on Sunday night at FunCity Turf.
Turning Point:
Feller's opener came 56 seconds in to give the Pioneers the lead for good less than a minute in.
First Half:
Feller opened the scoring 56 seconds in for the fourth-fastest goal to start a match in the Pioneers DI history.
McKenna Dannenhauer earned the assist on the play, having had her shot saved by Western Illinois goalkeeper Navas Rodriguez. Feller knocked home the rebound for her first of the 2021 campaign. Sunday night's assist for Dannenhauer marked the first point of her career
Denver made it 2-0 in the seventh minute when
Meg Halvorson converted from the penalty spot to give the Pioneers their fourth different goal scorer this season. Halvorson's tally was the 15
th of her career and her second in two tries from the spot.
Denver held an 11-2 edge in shots in the opening 45 minutes, including 7-0 on target.
Second Half:
Natalie Beckman found the back of the net in the 64
th minute to give the Pioneers a season-high three goals. Beckman's tally was her second of the weekend and the eighth of her career.
Feller completed her brace in the 79
th minute on an unassisted goal for the 19
th tally of her career.
Significant Stats:
- Associate head coach Kris Peat managed the Pioneers again on Sunday with assistant Levi Rossi, as head coach Jeff Hooker and volunteer assistant Katie Hooker missed both matches this weekend due to personal reasons. Jeff Hooker was scheduled to rejoin the team on Saturday night, but his flight was cancelled.
- Feller's game-winner was the eighth of her career, moving her into a tie for 12th in Denver's DI career record book.
- Feller's opener was the fourth-fastest goal in Denver's DI history
