Snap Shots
- Denver leads the all-time Battle for the Gold Pan, 14-13. The Pioneers split their series with the Tigers earlier this season on Jan. 1-2 (4-3 L, 6-1 W). The Gold Pan must be won outright. The Pioneers won the trophy last season with a 3-0-1 record against the Tigers. The four-game series between Denver and Colorado College replaces games originally slated for Jan. 29-30 and Feb. 27 & March 6
- This season, the 2021 Frozen Faceoff will be a single-elimination conference tournament in Grand Forks, N.D. from March 12-16. The winner of the tournament will receive an automatic bid to the NCAA tournament. There will be no third-place game. Denver ('14 &'18) and Minnesota Duluth ('17, '19) are the only two-time winners of the NCHC Frozen Faceoff
- The Pioneers have outshot their opponent in 15 of 20 games including eight of the last 10. The Crimson & Gold have fired 30 or more shots in 10 games and 35 or more shots in four games. Denver ranks 10th in the NCAA in shots on goal/game margin (+6.45). The Pioneers rank 4th in the NCAA in shots against/game (24.3). Carter Savoie leads the team and ranks 3rd in the NCHC in shots (76). He leads the team and ranks 3rd in the NCHC in shots/game (3.80)
- Denver has led in 12 of 20 games this season and are 7-5-0 in those games. The Pioneers are 6-4-0 when scoring the first goal of a game and 1-8-1 when allowing the first goal of a game. Denver is 6-2-0 when leading after the 2nd period and 1-10-1 when trailing or tied after the 2nd period
- For the last 20 years, the NCAA Men's Ice Hockey Committee has used the Pairwise rankings to set the field for the NCAA tournament. That method is ineffective this year due to a lack of inter-conference games, though components of the algorithm will still be used including quality wins, home/road weightings, overtime wins vs. regulation wins and strength of schedule. The committee can also use the "eye test" with assistance from regional advisory committees, made up primarily of coaches from the various conference. Each conference will receive one automatic bid, which the NCHC will award to the winner of the 2021 Frozen Faceoff
- The Pioneers had 10 alumni on 2020-21 NHL Opening Day rosters: Danton Heinen, Troy Terry (Anaheim Ducks), Ian Mitchell (Chicago Black-hawks), Trevor Moore (Los Angeles Kings), Will Butcher (New Jersey Devils), Scott Mayfield (New York Islanders), Jason Zucker (Pittsburgh Penguins), Dylan Gambrell (San Jose Sharks), Tyler Bozak (St. Louis Blues) and Paul Stastny (Winnipeg Jets). Logan O'Connor (Colorado Avalanche) and Dakota Mermis (Minnesota Wild) are traveling with their NHL teams as members of their taxi squads
- The Pioneers are wearing jersey patches with the letters "JB" honoring the late Joy Burns whose vast contributions to DU included becoming the first woman to chair the University of Denver Board of Trustees, which she did for 17 years, making direct contributions to the physical trans-formation of campus and helping the athletic department move to Division I
