Game Recap: Men's Ice Hockey |

Denver Beats No. 9 Omaha, 3-1

DENVER – The Denver Pioneers hockey team defeated the No. 9 Omaha Mavericks 3-1 on Friday at Magness Arena.

Turning Point
Cole Guttman's snipe at 1:41 of the third period gave the Pioneers a two-goal cushion and stood as the game winner.

Quotable
"I liked for the most part our pace and intensity. I thought our penalty kill had maybe its best performance of the year." - Richard and Kitzia Goodman Head Coach David Carle

First Period
Denver outshot Omaha 11-8 in the opening frame and both teams went 0/1 on the power play.

Second Period
Denver took advantage of an Omaha line change at 1:15 of the second period to score the first goal of the game. Sensing pressure, Mike Benning turned back toward the Pioneer zone as Cole Guttman swept through and carried the puck past a changing Maverick defenseman to create an odd-man rush. Carter Savoie drove down the right-wing side and opened up for a one-timer to mark his team-leading 10th goal of the season.  The Pioneers continued to apply pressure with 19 shots to Omaha's six, bringing the total to 30-14 through two periods.

Third Period
Another fast start to the period gave Denver a 2-0 lead at 1:41 of the period. Slava Demin kept an Omaha clearing attempt in the zone with a tap pass to Bobby Brink, who fed Cole Guttman at the left circle. Guttman wired a wrist shot bar down to the blocker side of Isaiah Saville. Omaha responded with a shot of offense and its top line cut the lead at 8:17 on Chayse Primeau's goal. Denver killed two minor penalties with a one-goal lead before they went on their own man advantage in the final five minutes. Hank Crone scored a tap-in from Guttman on a Pioneer five-on-three power play at 18:36 of the third to seal Denver's victory.
