Pioneers Fall to Fighting Hawks 2-1 in Overtime

Grand Forks, N.D. – North Dakota scored with 1:27 left in regulation and 8:37 into overtime to defeat the Denver Pioneers 2-1 in the NCHC Frozen Faceoff semifinal on Monday at Ralph Engelstad Arena.

Turning Point
Jasper Weatherby's game-tying goal at 18:33 of the third period.

First Period
Playing with only 16 skaters for the second straight game, Denver turned in a solid opening period with Magnus Chrona making nine saves and the Pioneers generating four shots. Neither team took a penalty or allowed a high-grade scoring chance.

Second Period
Denver stayed clamped defensively and its chances eventually came. Slava Demin & Ryan Barrow each had breakaways in a period where the Pioneers outshot the Fighting Hawks, 10-3. At 5:52, Denver capitalized on the first power play of the game as Carter Savoie's cross-ice pass deflected off Mark Senden's stick and past Adam Scheel, who had denied Demin's attempt one minute earlier. The Pioneers carried a 1-0 lead into the second intermission.

Third Period
One minute into the period Shane Pinto hit the left post from the right circle during North Dakota's only power play in regulation. With 1:27 left, he fired a one-timer from the left circle. He didn't miss twice. Pinto's game-tying shot caught Jasper Weatherby's stick on its way past Chrona, who had made a litany of saves in the period including a trio of stops with 6:45 left. Pinto's goal capped a period of pressure from the Fighting Hawks. It also came moments after Cole Guttman sailed a bid at an empty net inches wide from the other end of the ice. North Dakota outshot Denver 11-3 in the frame.

Overtime
Chrona continued to keep the Pioneers in the game through a 2:00 penalty kill, but six seconds after the expiration of the penalty Gavin Hain ended the game with a one-timer from the left circle.
