FARGO, N.D. – The [50/44] University of Denver men's tennis program won three Summit League matches in 49 hours to clinch its sixth Summit League regular season title, capped off with a 5-2 win at North Dakota on Sunday afternoon at the Choice Health and Fitness Center.
Doubles:
Denver earned the all-important doubles point with a pair of 6-1 wins at No. 1 and No. 2 doubles.
Singles:
With the third match in three days, head coach Ricardo Rubio mixed up his singles lineup a bit on Sunday, but the Pioneers earned wins on courts two, three, five and six.
James Davis improved to 12-3 on the season in singles with his sixth win of the campaign on the No. 2 court, taking his match 6-2, 6-3. Mattia Ros won on court three by a count of 6-1, 6-4. Nicolas Herrero Cuesta won his seventh-straight singles match and improved to 11-1 overall with a 6-0, 6-3 straight-set win. Daniel Krulig got the start at the No. 6 spot on Sunday, winning 6-2, 6-4 for his sixth win in nine tries in the 2021 campaign.
Significant Stats:
Sunday's win gave Denver its seventh NCAA Division I conference regular season title, adding a title in its only year in the Western Athletic Conference to the six Summit League crowns.
UP NEXT:
The Pioneers will close out the regular season next Saturday at Illinois State. First serve is set for 12 p.m. MT. Denver will host the 2021 Summit League Men's and Women's Tennis Championships at the Denver Tennis Park April 30-May 1.
