DENVER - University of Denver men's basketball head coach
Jeff Wulbrun announced the signing of
Payton Moore on Friday. The incoming transfer from Rice is set to continue his academic and athletic career with the Pioneers.
Moore, a native of Los Angeles, spent the past three seasons playing at Rice University, where he graduated with his bachelor's degree in three years. He will pursue his MBA at DU.
"In Payton Moore, we have added a player to our program that reflects all of our core values," Wulbrun said. "He's a man of integrity, has a great investment in all he does and has a selfless attitude. He is a great academic fit for the University of Denver, having graduated from Rice University in just three years."
A 6-foot-4 athletic guard, Moore appeared in 25 games in 2020-21, making two starts. He averaged 5.2 points per game to go with 2.4 rebounds, highlighted by season-high 14 points against Our Lady of the Lake back on Nov. 28, 2020. Moore also pulled down a season high in rebounds (5) and assists (4) against Southern Miss on Feb. 5.
"We will benefit from Payton's maturity and experience as a three-year contributor in Conference USA," Wulbrun added. "He brings versatility on both ends of the floor, with the ability to defend multiple positions. He has a high basketball IQ and is a savvy playmaker with a great ability to read defenses. We are thrilled to welcome Payton to our program and know we'll benefit greatly from his presence on and off the floor for the next two years."
During his high school playing career at Santa Monica, he helped lead the team to a 20-8 record as a senior, including going 10-0 in conference play. He averaged 13.0 points, 8.0 rebounds and 4.0 assists during the 2016-17 season.
Denver has started its offseason workouts in preparation for the upcoming 2021-22 season.
