DENVER – The [15/15] University of Denver women's lacrosse team gutted out a defensive slugfest to avenge its only loss of the regular season and defeat Colorado 10-7 Thursday night at Peter Barton Lacrosse Stadium.
Inside the Box Score:
Sammie Morton had a career day to lead Denver on the defensive end, tying for the seventh-most caused turnovers in a game with six, to go with two ground balls.
Molly Little had three caused turnovers, four ground balls and four draw controls.
Sam Thacker also had four groundballs to share the lead in that category with Little.
Hannah Liddy had a game-high four points on a goal and three assists, picking up the three helpers needed to become the fourth player in program history to distribute 100 career assists.
Julia Gilbert and
Kailey Conry had two goals apiece to lead the Pioneers in the goal column.
Eliza Radochonski rounded out the multi-point getters with a goal and an assist.
First Half:
After a sloppy first stage of the first half both ways, Colorado finally got on the board 8:53 into the contest with Charlie Rudy's 45
th of the campaign.
Denver responded with four-straight in just over a nine-minute span.
Caroline Wiseman got Denver on the board with a free-position tally. Gilbert's 20
th of the season gave Denver its first lead, a lead it would keep for the remainder of the first half. Little scored in transition to make it 3-1 and Radochonski finished a one-timer off a feed from Liddy to cap the run.
The Buffs scored three of the final four to end the half, sandwiched around a Liddy goal in transition. The Pioneers took a 5-4 lead into the intermission. Denver had nine caused turnovers in the first half, led by three from Little and Morton
.
Second Half:
Colorado opened the second half scoring to tie things back up at 5-5. Denver answered with consecutive goals from Gilbert and
Mackenzie Wallevand to make it 7-5 Pioneers with 21:18 to play.
A free-position tally from
Bea Behrins answered a Chloe Willard goal to keep the Pioneers lead at two with 15:57 to go. Conry's first of two late second half goals pushed the lead to three and gave Liddy her 100
th career assist.
Conry's second concluded the scoring on Thursday night, a behind-the-back goal from Radochonski with 42 seconds left, her 16
th goal of the campaign.
Significant Stats:
- With her assist with 11:49 to go in the second half, Hannah Liddy recorded her 100th career assist, the fourth player in program history to reach that milestone. She joins Jill Remenapp, Steph Coyne and Kara Secora on the list.
- Denver improved to 5-3 in the series against its in-state rival.
- The Pioneers improved to 114-22 in Peter Barton Lacrosse Stadium, winning their 17th-straight.
- DU's perfect season at home (9-0) is its sixth-straight undefeated season at Peter Barton.
- Denver's 17 caused turnovers tied a season high with the Pioneers March 19 win over Butler.
