Denver Falls to [2] Northwestern in NCAA Round of 16

No. 2 seeded Cats end Pios’ 16-game winning streak

EVANSTON, Ill.  – The University of Denver women's lacrosse team dropped its NCAA Second Round game to No. 2 seed Northwestern by a count of 19-4 on Sunday afternoon at Lanny and Sharon Martin Stadium.
 
Inside the Box Score:
Molly Little netted her first career hat trick, scoring three times in the first half. Amelia Cole set Denver's single-game NCAA Tournament saves record, stopping 15 shots on Sunday.
 
On the defensive side of the ball, Denver had four players with a pair of caused turnovers in Little, Kailee Lammers, Cole and Ellie Curry. Lammers had five ground balls and Cole had four.
 
First Half:
Little not only completed her first career hat trick in the first half, but she gave the Pioneers their only lead of the contest with a goal in transition 1:48 into the game, scoring from over 25 yards out to put Denver ahead.
 
Northwestern answered with the next five tallies before Little scored her second with 12:30 to play in the stanza. The Cats went on another run in the later stages of the first half, scoring four straight to push their lead to 9-2 with 6:06 to play.
 
Denver scored the final two goals of the half. Kayla DeRose finished a free-position attempt with 3:44 to go to make it 9-3 and Little completed her hat trick with 19 seconds to go to make it 9-4 at the break.
 
Second Half:
Northwestern scored all 10 goals in the second half to run away with their 14th win and stay undefeated coming out of a pod in Evanston that had three teams with a combined one loss entering the NCAA Tournament.  
 
Significant Stats:
  • Denver fell to 6-5 in the NCAA Tournament overall
  • The Pioneers 16-game winning streak was its second-longest in a season in program history (17-straight in 2014).
  • Denver's 16 wins in the season matches the 2007 and 2019 campaign (16-3 | 16-4) in a tie for the third-most single season wins in program history.
    • 18 wins in 2013
    • 19 wins in 2014
