Castro Competes at Tokyo Olympics

DU Gymnastics alumna represents Chile in third Olympics appearance

TOKYO – University of Denver alumna and former gymnastics team member Simona Castro competed at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, scoring a 46.399 in the all-around on Sunday.

Castro, who competed for DU in 2010-13 and represented her home country of Chile, placed 75th overall during Sunday's qualifying round. She finished 78th on bars (11.533), 79th on beam (11.433) and 85th on floor (10.233) while also posting a 13.200 on vault.

This was Castro's third Olympics appearance. She became the first Chilean gymnast to qualify for the Olympics in 2012 and placed 43rd overall (50.932). Four years later, she finished 52nd overall with a 51.399 in the 2016 Rio Games.

At least one DU gymnast has competed in each of the last four Olympics, starting with Venezuelan Jessica Lopez, who attended DU in 2006-09 and first qualified for the Beijing Games in 2008. Both Castro and Lopez competed at the 2012 and 2016 Olympics. In Rio, Lopez placed seventh in the all-around and sixth on bars in Rio in 2016.

A total of four Denver gymnasts have advanced to at least one Olympic Games. Annamari Maaranen, who competed for DU in 2008-11, qualified for the 2008 Olympics in Beijing but did not compete due to injury.

The 2020 Tokyo Olympics were delayed one year due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Originally scheduled for late July 2020, the Games are now being held from July 23 – August 8, 2021.
